Discovering Great Sites for SAT Test Prep & Education

This perfect score project has lead me to a treasure trove of great sites.

Here is a list of a few of my favorite new discoveries:

  • Test prep tutor Michelle Cronin.  When I saw Michelle's list of recommended sites and books, I knew we were seeing test prep through a similar lens.*
  • Mike the 2400 Tutor's site, PWNtheSAT.  I've mentioned him before, but his site is so much fun, it's worth mentioning again.  I know I will have arrived when I can do his "diagnostic test."*
  • Help Your Child with Math -- Discovered after reading Dr. Yaqoob's book --which is a must read for all parents with kids in school (all ages).  It's actually a book for everyone who has to study because it is filled with excellent advice, much of which I could feel in my bones and was glad to have it articulated for me.  This book deserves it's own post; coming soon.

*I want to start an "SAT MeetUp" with Mike and Michelle for people who think doing SAT problems are fun.

Thanks for the shout-out! You'll get that drill yet, and then you'll be well on your way to that 800 math. :)

I sure hope so. Today was an SAT wash. Same with tomorrow. Little time on Sat. & Sunday too. Then, focus focus focus for next week, because May 7 is next test. It will be SO EMBARRASSING if I don't do better. And based on my practice test a few days ago, it was not looking good (thank you Stanley Kaplan). BTW, did you ever do Kaplan and what do you think of their methods?

      • http://blog.pwnthesat.com PWN the SAT

I've never done Kaplan, so I have little more than a superficial understanding of the Kaplan methods. I'm reluctant to opine too much for that reason, but I've heard a lot about them anecdotally from students I've worked with, most of it bad. In fairness, I don't hear from the kids for whom Kaplan works (there must be some) because they're satisfied and don't need to look further.

As for the May test: remember that to go up 100 points from where you were last time, you really only need to make one fewer mistake per multiple choice section. So focus on one common error you're making per section, and try to turn it into a strength before 5/7. :)

          Excellent advice.

Excellent. Going to study my March results now. And I'm thinking the TI 89 might nudge me up this time around. (Going to bed before I start to feel confident.)

Aw, thank you Debbie :) I'm planning a bunch of future posts, including one about your project! I swear I'll get around to it once I'm less busy :) Also, I have the same TI-89 that I've had since 10th or 11th grade of high school. I love my little guy.

Wait, you have the same TI-89? Or are you referring to the 83 or 84?

      • http://tutor.michellecronin.com Michelle

        TI-89 :)

          Good to know!
