For The Record…..

I love 2012 for a whole lotta of reasons, one of which is that I can post someone else's media story with my own personal corrections. (How great is that, right?)

Believe me, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth, and I know very well how this all works (i.e. like that game of "telephone"), and Tara, the writer, was wonderful and smart....

....but, since this is 2012, and I can write my own corrections to her story, I'm going to take this opportunity to make just a few little changes here, in my own edition, where I'm the narrator... (Have we discussed the Rachomon Effect?):

I love this format for a "reply."

      Thanks Jen!
The master procrastinator in me has nothing better to do ;)

  • Jen

Ooh, except maybe add a link to the original article?  Or isn't there one?  *That* would be shocking!

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Good point good point....though I hate to be linking to something I feel didn't conveyed "me" accurately.

  • http://www.wegrowmedia.com/ Dan Blank

    I love this!

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Thanks Dan. I'm a stickler for accuracy :)

can i have some of your next 1000000000$ on test prep?

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

so most definitely absolutely for sure.

But again, that's not exactly what I said, or how I said it anyway.

But, whatever.  My next million goes to you.  For sure.

  • http://twitter.com/akilbello Akil Bello

What did Ethan have to say about getting a shout out for beating mom in the post?  And I'm sure you mentioned Mike, what happened to that? did they only list big names?

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

First of all, b/f anyone jumps down my throat abt that, HE said I could say his score.  His reaction, not having read the piece of course, (why are kids like that? I include my former self) was "700's not that good."

I was like, okay, I would have taken it, but ok.  Let me see you do better ;)

The first college tour did motivate and inspire him -- and he's now taken to studying vocab (flipping finally)...

And OF COURSE I MENTIONED MIKE!!!!!  Actually, http://www.pwnthesat.com

You know, I know the deal, and I played anyway with eyes wide open. You talk for hours and they take what they need for their own agenda.  Fair enough.

But, but but but.....I got the internet to tell MY story (thank u 2012).

      • http://twitter.com/akilbello Akil Bello

I wasn't saying i thought Ethan should be mad about his score or you saying it. He's your kid and the way I'm gonna raise my kids is that until they move out I get to define whats private and whats not (so says the dad of a 6 year old).

I was just wondering if he came home and was like "Bam! the whole world knows i pwned you on the SAT, yeah booooyyyy (in Flavor Flav voice).

        • Elise

You decide what's private?  You mean you haven't heard your kid outside telling the neighbor that you are inside pooping?  True story.  Sigh:)

          • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Oh, Elise, don't even get me started on this one.  I have a whole other book I could write on this subject.  But I'm going to stop myself from going any further, lest I be misunderstood.

I've been thinking so much about you lately as I've been writing and thinking about what it means to be a mom....and you come to mind often.

          • Elise

Really?  Because all too often I feel like a failure.  Other times I feel like a hypocrite because I don't always practice what I preach to my kids (she says as she pops another breakfast jelly bean into her mouth).  Then there are the times that I am so angry at others who seem to be battling against me as I try to do what I think is best for my kids...those few crummy teachers come to mind -this year has been particularly trying.  I feel like I did MY job and sent them great kids, now they can do THEIR job.  Can you tell I am really thinking about ONE particular teacher?  Ha ha. I have found this whole motherhood thing exhausting.  Then people inform me that my kids won't truly appreciate me until they are thirty..or maybe never.  Then there is the person who told me that my kids didn't ask to be born so she doesn't feel like they ever are required to appreciate me.  Yes, exhausting.  Ha ha..(.she laughed hysterically in an insane kind of way). NO WONDER I EAT JELLY BEANS FOR BREAKFAST!  PS  I sound grumpy but I am not really - just being honest.

          • Jen

I think this is the curse of children growing older.  It seems so much clearer and simpler when they are little.  Then they got older and I definitely got older and it just seems that it's just much more anxiety producing and very much less certain.  Except for the bad parts, like a really stupid school district.

        • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

          tee hee

He's playing modest on me ;)

  • bob miller

I love that you've taken this editorial appart, I am laughing hard. Your persistance is just unbelievable. Great work Debbie!

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

      Thanks Bob ;)

  • Ann Kingman

You're a rock star, and this just is just one more bit of proof. Waiting for the news story on how you annotated the NY Post....

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

      haha Thanks Ann!!!

  • Markatauber

    Love this, Debbie.

I finally made it here to congratulate you on the New York Post and Huffington Post articles. I think it's great that the word about your trials and tribulations in pursuing a perfect SAT score is spreading! Now that I've read your post, I don't think it's so great that you got misquoted, but the basic information still seems good from my vantage point. So congratulations!

    • AmyMartinRodriguez

Oh! I just finally got home to my laptop and read the New York Post article (non-annotated version - couldn't access it on the iPad without a subscription and don't really need one, living in CA) and was amazed that the whole point seemed to be that test prep doesn't work and that you had nothing but criticism for test prep companies, when you achieved a HUGE score increase. 2130 is a good score that many students would find cause for celebration. I guess that all of the criticism is more sensational than a more balanced view.

Funny that it didn't seem as negative when I read it through the annotation!

      • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

I know...the NY Post totally missed the point ;)

But, I should not be surprised by that, right?!

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Thank you Amy!  Spreading the word about how to do it...equalizing the playing field a little, hopefully clarifying for other confused parents and stressed out kids -- is good -- even if it is misquoted/had to be corrected by me.

      Praise the internet!

How am I only seeing this now? This is amazing. Way to go.

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

How am I just seeing THIS now!

Hahaha.. yes, there is something wonderfully powerful about being able to build your own website in this day and age. Knowing the powers-that-be don't get the final word any more. Good on ya for correcting their mistakes :) and congratulations on your improvements! (too bad we couldn't have worked together on Math - my favorite section as well :)
