Things That Aren’t True

Half the time I’m completely winging this motherhood business.” – Anne Lamott

I haven't taken the time to fully explain what this Perfect Score Project is, and what it is not.  But I plan to.  In fact, I'm writing a book that explains the whole kit and caboodle.

I can tell you that it isn't what the New York Post wrote (see annotations in link), and that the Huffington Post got it RIGHT (thanks to a super smart mom, who's been there).

I will say this, for now, and then I have to get back to work:

When I started this project, back in early 2011, I thought, as long as I have to look into this test prep thing for my own kids, and, given that I seem to be the only one left on the planet who finds the joy of the SAT,  I might as well share what I learn along the way, right?  Maybe spare others some wheel-spinning, money-wasting, anxiety-producing overwhelming high-stakes investigation energy?

I had noble intentions, I assure you.

Unless you've lived through this magilla of a process as a parent, in recent times I might add, no judging!

Here's a video that explains a little more (I hope) of what I was thinking, and how it went.

7 SATs + 10 months =  my 2011.  Check out the SAT Resources,  Tips, and FAQ pages for frequent updates about what I learned.

    Debbie,
Love the honesty here about what it is, what it isn't, and the reality behind the pressures everyone feels in this process. Congrats!

Thank you Dan!!!  I can't wait till your little guy gets up to bat.  I am going to be able to help you SO MUCH!!!!!

Oddly, I had not yet considered my 1.5 year old son taking the SATs. :) Perhaps they won't have them by the time he is up for them!

oh, I wouldn't count on that.  There's WAY too much money involved for too many people to allow that to happen.

If you don't mind me asking, what did your son get on the SAT?

    • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Hey. I don't mind you asking, but I feel like it's his place to answer...and he's at school so I can't ask him now ;)

I'll tell you that he did very well, I believe he can still do better, and the NY Post got that one detail correct ;)  (he gave me permission to tell them).

when will you take the Sat again? I've missed reading about the challenges that you have faced studying for this complex examination. :)

I have to finish writing book...then, I kind of can't wait to get back to it. I don't feel done at all.

Great explanation for why you did this! Thanks for sharing so much of this process!

Thank you Amy!  I can't wait to get back to it.  I've been so sidetracked it's killing me...

      Soon... soon ;)

Glad to hear it! Any chance that the full post on the decline in the American education system is still on the list? I would love to hear more about your perspective!

        • http://www.perfectscoreproject.com Debbie Stier

Yes, still on list...though in an extremely large "To Do" pile!

I can relate! I still haven't compared all of those SAT tests to give a final answer to how many unique ones are available (I made it most of the way through and got sidetracked). It's still on my list though! I'm glad that this post is on yours - I'll be patient.
